When I moved back to the D/FW area, after being gone for over two decades, to take care of my ailing mother, I knew I wanted to reacquaint myself with the familiar things I had grown up around. One such thing was the local farmer's market I knew as a child located in Weatherford, Texas.
My childhood nostalgia of Weatherford Farmer's Market left me with wonderful memories of delicious Parker County peaches. Oh, goodness! I remember as a child biting into one of those peaches as it's juice dripped down my hands and arms, as I held it to my mouth. Honestly, I've never had a more juicy peach since. Whether you've been going to farmer's markets for years or if this is your first time, there are some things that you need to know. I'll share with you a few things I've learned along the way.
Almost every town or city has a farmer's market and as one of the oldest forms of direct marketing, they have always been a way for the farmer and public to have a more direct interaction leaving out that pesky middle man. By visiting the farmer's market, you get local food that is of better quality, seasonal, and also supports the farmer or rancher. It keeps commerce local and gives back to the community. So, don't worry if you're new at going to one, the farmers love to share their knowledge and can even advise you on how to become a grower yourself.
Don't be SHY!
What you'll find at a local farmer's markets is more than fresh seasonal produce. You'll experience the connection of the farmers' face, who's invested sweat and love into every fruit, vegetable, jar of jelly, salsa, even honey. Also important, you get to form a relationship with them
You get to meet the people who worked hard in order to bring you crops and products. I've seen bedding plants, vegetable plants, chickens, local honey, maple syrup, pumpkin patches, apple cider; pottery, furniture, etc.
I'm not exactly a farmer-type, myself (YET- THERE ARE CHICKENS IN MY FUTURE- IT WILL HAPPEN and A VEGGIE GARDEN) where I can grow my own produce — but I'd so much rather support a local business or farmer than a large impersonal corporate grocery store.
Not to mention the fresh ingredients purchased at the local farmer's market, makes cooking at home a healthier and tastier experience.
